Figure 1 - Tapit Architecture
The mobile client
The client, running on the mobile handset, will be a user’s entry point into Tapit. It will allow
the user to see and manage the services they have registered for as well as view all services
available through Tapit. When the user wishes to focus on an individual service that they have
registered for, they can select that service and Tapit will launch into a user interface (UI)
dedicated to the service. This dedicated UI is known as a “template” and gives the service
provider a uniquely flexible approach that not only allows them to brand their services but
also to build a custom user experience around them.
The payment “templates” are based on Helixion’s lok-MPL payment platform. lok-MPL is a
complete, generic mobile payment development platform that easily integrates into mobile
wallets and m-banking applications for multi-scheme (Visa, Mastercard, etc) Mobile Payment
Applications (MPAs) on mobile phones. It provides all the functionality required to fully
develop mobile NFC payment products regardless of the secure element or phone. By
encapsulating the complexities of the payment scheme business logic and secure element
communications into a coherent package it has allowed this development to focus on the
important part - creating a compelling and consistent user experience for Swisscom’s
customers whatever the payment scheme or underlying OS platform.
The architecture described above is a bespoke development that Helixion undertook for
Swisscom. On the face of it, it may have appeared easier for Swisscom to buy an off-the-shelf
wallet solution – there is no shortage of them available. What Swisscom found was that they
did not provide the flexibility, payment support and user experience that they wanted to
provide their customers with, or needed to achieve their strategic goals. By partnering with
Helixion, Swisscom has been able to utilise a proven NFC payment platform - lok-MPL - while
designing a wallet solution that will deliver the user experience that is fundamental to
achieving its vision for Tapit.
