Tapit: Project Start
Prior to starting the commercial development, Swisscom
first needed to identify the challenges the project might
face and then build the team that could work together to
overcome them. In order to achieve this, Swisscom
undertook the following steps which helped both with
partner selection and to de-risk the full scale project.
Pilot
Swisscom’s first step was to run a pilot project with the purpose of aiding commercial and
technical decisions regarding full Tapit development. It also provided an opportunity to
assess potential partners. This was Helixion’s first engagement with Swisscom. Helixion was
selected for the pilot due to its payment scheme expertise and proven track record in
delivering successful pilot deployments.
The pilot focussed on delivering a single payment application enabling users to make
contactless payments from their mobile phone using a combination of a Swisscom SIM card
and a handset application. Based on lok-MPL, Helixion’s generic NFC mobile payment
platform that operates across any wallet, any payment scheme, any mobile handset and any
secure element, there was a single Visa card instance pre-personalised onto the SIM. The
handset application was a customisation of Helixion’s Baseline Application for Android in
Swisscom’s “Mobile Wallet” branding.
The project outcome was successful. Not only did it give Swisscom confidence in its choice of
partners and, in the case of Helixion, that it delivered quality software, expertise and support,
it also provided a valuable education for all parties involved. Payment may only be one part of
the final solution but it is crucial one. As a result of working on the pilot, in-depth knowledge
was gained on the technicalities (personalisation, payment scheme certification, etc.) of
putting together a mobile payment product. It also provided an insight into how users interact
with the solution.
The learning points taken from the trial were very much taken on board; the results of which
can clearly be seen in the unique, compelling and above all easy user experience of the full
scale Swisscom Tapit solution.
Workshops
Once Swisscom had decided on its partners, the next step was to bring them all together. This
was a crucial step in building that all important working relationship where roles and
responsibilities could be clearly articulated and defined. Importantly it allowed everyone to
contribute which resulted in all party buy-in to the Swisscom model and the aims and
objectives for Tapit.
High Level Design
While the pilot was a single payment application, the commercial development was a full
blown mobile wallet. Just like a leather wallet, a mobile wallet is a container for multiple
services, not just payment but potentially loyalty, transport, ticketing and many more. So with
