Global Payments boards the Apple Pay train
The Georgia Institute of Technology is partnering with payment processor BitPay to become the first university in the world to integrate bitcoin payments into its stadium concession sales and campus card declining balance account program, the school has reported.
Bitcoin POS devices will be located in the student section of Bobby Dodd Stadium. In addition, the school's BuzzCard Center, located in Technology Square, will house a Bitcoin-enabled terminal that will allow for declining balance account deposits using bitcoin as a method of payment. BuzzCard holders choosing to use bitcoin will be able to purchase food and goods at almost all locations on the Tech campus.
"We look forward to [making] bitcoin a viable payment option for our students and fans," Georgia Tech AD Mike Bobinski said. "At Georgia Tech, we are always looking to lead in innovative ways, and this partnership with BitPay gives us an opportunity to do so by integrating this new technology at a sports venue and in the daily lives of our students."
In July of this year, BitPay announced a partnership with the Georgia Tech Athletic Association designed to build awareness to bitcoin. The BitPay logo is displayed along with the bitcoin symbol in Bobby Dodd Stadium as well as the McCamish Pavilion through the 2014-2015 school year.
In September, Pheeva launched a Georgia Tech-branded digital wallet, a dedicated hot wallet for everyday bitcoin transactions.
